One deadline. Two very different decisions for employers.
31st of October is more than a date on the EPF calendar this year. It is a point at which employers need to look in two directions at once – at the ECR for Sep 26 are processing now and at the employee records they may have left behind years ago.
The extension of the September 2026 ECR deadline gives employers additional time to complete current-month compliance.
At the same time, the Employees’ Enrolment Campaign, 2026, offers a time-bound route to address certain cases of historical non-enrolment.
The dates coincide. The decisions, however, are different.
- September 2026 ECR: More time, but no room for a casual review
EPFO has extended the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remitting contributions for the wage month of September 2026 from 15 October to 31 October 2026, through its circular dated 13 October 2026.
The extension follows the revision of the wage ceiling effective from 17 September 2026 and the payroll adjustments arising from it.
For employers, the additional time should be used to do more than simply upload the return. Employee-wise eligibility, revised wage calculations and contribution amounts need to be reconciled before the ECR is filed and payment is made.
One distinction is important: the extension relates specifically to the wage month of September 2026. It should not be treated as a general extension for subsequent wage months.
The practical objective is straightforward. Use the additional time to get the figures right, not merely to postpone filing.
- Employees’ Enrolment Campaign, 2026: Look beyond the current payroll
The second development calls for a different kind of review.
The Employees’ Enrolment Campaign, 2026, is intended to bring eligible employees who were never enrolled in EPF during the specified historical period into the compliance framework. The campaign though initially notified on 10th Oct 2025 but after widening the period based on date of joining of employees, updated provision was notified in EPS Scheme on 29th June 2026 and will cease to operate on 31 October 2026.

The takeaway
For employers, the immediate priority is to run two separate reviews, establish the applicable financial exposure and complete the relevant actions before the deadline.
31 October 2026 is the date to track. The more important question is whether the right compliance action has been taken for the right set of employees.
